ETC’s Annual Family Show for the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival

Performances @ 9:00 11:00 1:00 & 3:00 $2 per person

@ Trinity United Church, Arthur St. N., across from the IGA

What a success these family shows have become! And it’s a great way to rest your feet and get out of the cold!

All the performers are between the ages of 10 and 14! If you were at the Silent Auction and saw the “Ghost Busters” number they performed you know what a delight this theatre genre can be. We welcome all this dedicated young talent to the company.

Director is Deb Deckert with technical and back stage assistance thanks to Joe Brenner and Sue Rose.

Hamish opening

The world premiere of 'Hamish', written and directed by our very own Michael Grant, drew an outstanding response from the public on opening night on Wed., Jan. 31/07 and the following comments in a review courtesy of Valerie Hill in The Record.

"A wee bit of Scotland hit the stage in Elmira last night with the opening of Hamish, a delightful and often poignant tale of family and, more importantly, heritage."

"Considerable comic relief ......"

"At times, this play seems like a British farce with plenty of door slamming and mistaken identity, and this too makes for great comedy, ...."

".......transport their audience to a different world, an old world of tradition and honour, all done through humour for which the Scots are renowned."

"Hamish is a real romp through the Scottish highlands and could become a staple of community theatre."

These remarks rang true as I watched the play and, ultimately, had to chastize the playwright for drawing tears from my companion with the wonderful, poignant ending.

GO SEE IT! - it's a delight to watch.

It runs for another weeknd, Feb. 8 - 10/07 with tickets only $17, (click on ticket link to buy), and $5 for eyego.

WODL Adjudication

Want to enhance your knowledge of theatre?

Want to find out what someone else thought of the play?

Come out to Hamish on Sunday, Feb. 4/07 at 2:30 to hear the adjudicator's comments and suggestions on any potential improvements that might be made. Dennis Johnson, well known in Guelph theatre circles, will be the adjudicator for this production and you may remember him from the adjudication of Silver Dagger.

The adjudication is one expert person's opinion and, in comparison with other Western Ontario Drama League shows, will determine the winners of various categories in the "Out Of Festival" competition.

Angels in Love

The Story - It is 1888 and Little Lord Fauntleroy has grown up and married - well, sort of....

Thoroughly babied by his mother, he and his young bride are complete innocents in the ways of married couples. In desperation, Mama asks her rather worldly friend to take the young lad under her wing and coach him on his husbandly duties. The scheme works too well as Cedric falls for the 'other woman', and the overbearing grandfather - Holy Victorian Horrors! - has seen them embracing in public and mistakenly believes it to be his daughter-in-law.

As if this wasn't enough to deal with, Mama is being pursued by unsuitable suitors, including one intent on murder! Family feuds, mistaken identity and true love abound in this comedy of manners!

Foursome wrap up

Closing night was no different than any other.

The audience loved it. To quote subscriber Holly:

"I must tell you that the play was hilarious. I haven't laughed that hard in a while...brought tears to my eyes. I thought it was really well done & we had a blast."

The success of the production, coupled with the minimal strike required when you're in your own facility, made The Foursome's closing a night to remember!

(Apparently the crew show of "The Foursome Wives" was great too! )

While comments from the Director include the post-audition standards like 'difficult choices, thanks to all who auditioned, etc.', these are particularly apt because this production is "the most personal, important and nerve-wracking experience of my theatrical career."

HAMISH

This is our first seasonal winter show to run Feb. 1-4 and 8-10/07.

The story - Gordon and Kelli, a young Canadian couple, go to Scotland to see Gordon's ancestral home. A large corporation wants to buy the property to build a distillery and Gordon couldn't care less because, after all, what has this to do with him? It's all in the past. However, someone cares very much. His great, great, great, great grandfather appears, to make him see the error of his ways - the only trouble is, Gordon is the only one who can see him!

Gordon Grant- He is a Canadian corporate lawyer in his thirties to mid forties. He was orphaned as a child and raised by his uncle and aunt. He is a workaholic and married to Kelli.

Kelli Grant- She is in her thirties and married to Gordon. She also works at the same firm. She holds a big secret.

Tomas- He is the caretaker of the cottage. He is a Scot, over 50 years old. He is caring yet very excitable. He is uneducated and married to “the old gabbing gazelle”.

Hamish Grant- A ghost, Gordon’s ancestor. Very much the larger then life, a tough highland warrior, but he also has a twinkle in his eye.

Shelby Sutherland- He is a very meek and nervous banker. He lacks social skills but is very book smart. The typical nerd. Can be Scottish or English.

Annette Gordon- A Scottish business woman of any age over 30. Her firm intends to purchase the Grant family cottage. She is married but was born a Grant. She used to be a highland dancer.

The lights went up, two lines were delivered and.....the audience burst into laughter!

The entire inaugural evening at our new theatre couldn't have been better. A full house, with peals of laughter bouncing from the newly painted walls launched our second 25 years.

To everyone involved in the lead-up to this wonderful night, ETC offers what the cast of The Foursome so richly deserved and received:

Gala opening tonight!

This is a warm, funny play which takes place entirely on the eighteen tees of a golf course. Four old college chums, home for their 25 year reunion, hook up for a round of golf and share their successes and failures.

This production guarantees many laughs throughout.

The obvious chemistry between the four actors is so apparent, you forget that it's actors on stage and truly believe you are watching four college friends reunite.
The barbs fly, the insults soar and the laughs are enormous.

Come out, enjoy the community atmosphere of our new theatre and share and evening of laughs with the Elmira Theatre Company family!

The show runs for the next three weekends, Nov. 3 - 5, 9 - 12 and 16 - 18. It's dinner theatre catered by The Stone Crock. Doors open on Fridays and Saturdays at 6:30, with dinner at 7:00 and the show to follow at 8:00. Sunday shows have doors opening at 4:30, dinner at 5:00 and the show starting at 6:00. Please note that Thurs. shows on Nov. 9 & 16 are show only starting at 8:00 P.M.

The Foursome progress

The Foursome rehearsals are in full swing as you can see in the photo album.

In the pictures, you'll see the bare bones rehearsal space that the production cast and crew have to deal with. There's only one month to go and they're spending many, many hours in a rehearsal space with no stage, no lighting or sound, nothing but lots of FUN!!

You will also note that the building has progressed dramatically from it's conception.

Thanks to the incredible amount of work currently pouring into Howard Ave., opening Gala will indeed raise the curtain on a spectacular future for ETC!

The Foursome

The heat of summer is subsiding, but, the heat of our new season is building!

Rehearsals for our production of The Foursome by Norm Foster started on Wed., Aug. 23/06. Cast and crew have begun the bonding that is such an integral part of the success of any of our plays. Golfing fun and activites are scheduled in addition to BBQ's, etc. that turn mere actors into the characters you'll see on stage for the first 3 weekends of November.

MINI-FEST

Congratulations to the cast and crew of AUTUMN BLOOMING!

ETC'S entry into this year's WODL Mini-Fest competition in Aylmer this past weekend had ETC's outstanding production values reproduced by actors Tracy Eccleston, Kathy Fahey, Danielle Deckert, Carol Lewis & Crystal Luckhardt. Director Gail Tonnizo-Wareing, SM Tracy Leighton, Tech Joe Brenner and Props Bev Dietrich rounded out the show.

Workshop leader Brian Van Norman had nothing but praise for the show, citing: costumes - spot on, two females carrying off the roles of males so believably, excellent blocking and great additional props - just an overall well executed production.
